Our 2023 Scholarship Program is now closed and will reopen early in 2024.

Scholarships are an important part of our commitment to helping to build safer, stronger and more innovative communities. We believe by supporting students, we're helping to foster the leaders of tomorrow— not just future leaders in our business, but in our communities as well.

In addition to the numerous scholarships and bursaries awarded by our operating companies, Emera awards two scholarships each year— see below for more.

The Chris Huskilson Emera Scholarship was created to honour former Emera President & CEO Chris Huskilson, who retired in 2018. Valued at $40,000, the scholarship is available to an Atlantic Canadian student attending an Atlantic Canadian university in a program related to science (natural), technology, engineering, entrepreneurship or math. Recipients of the scholarship receive $10,000 per year for four years. Recipients are also eligible for a paid 12-week internship and will work with a senior mentor from one of Emera’s companies. Learn more about the 2022 recipient of the Chris Huskilson Emera Scholarship below.

The Emera Employees' Children Scholarship is a one-time, non-renewable $2,000 award available to children/dependents of regular employees and retirees of Emera Inc., Emera Energy, Emera New Brunswick and Emera Newfoundland & Labrador. Other Emera affiliates maintain their own scholarship programs. Recipients may have the opportunity for a 12-week paid internship at Emera Inc. Past winners are permitted to re-apply each year.

2022 CHRIS HUSKILSON EMERA SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

Emma Crossan of Truro, Nova Scotia, was chosen as this year’s winner of the $40,000 Chris Huskilson Scholarship.

Emma is a graduate of the Cobequid Educational Centre where she enrolled in their International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. For Emma, science is a true passion. During the pandemic she also demonstrated great leadership & innovative thinking while developing a creative writing program for neurodivergent youth in her community, many of them members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Emma also volunteered to tutor students in math and chemistry. No stranger to adversity, she maintained a strong commitment to her academics & extracurricular activities when faced with hardship, which speaks to her work ethic and grit.

"Winning this scholarship will allow me to pursue my dreams without the concern of career limiting student loan debt,” says Emma. “I look forward to the opportunity to build connections with Emera and gain experience in my field before I graduate, an asset to my future career."
