Emera Environmental Policy

We’re committed to working in a way that is respectful and protective of the environment. To deliver on this commitment, each Emera company follows a clearly defined environmental policy and management framework.

Emera shares in the desires of our customers, shareholders, employees and others to enjoy the benefits of a sound economy in a healthy and sustainable environment. We are committed to meeting our business objectives in a manner which is respectful and protective of the environment, and in full compliance with legal requirements and company policy.

In promoting these principles, Emera companies exposed to environmental risks in their daily business, business alliances, partnerships or prospective ventures, will:

  • Make environmental considerations an integral part of the decision making as they pursue value to shareholders and quality services to customers.
  • Develop, verify and continually improve environmental management systems through strong management leadership and employee commitment.
  • Consider pollution prevention as the first option in preference to control or clean-up.
  • Work with employees and customers to promote the most efficient use of resources, products and services.
  • Communicate with all stakeholders on environmental performance in a proactive and open manner.

This Policy applies to all employees, visitors, contractors, vendors and suppliers working at an Emera workplace.

Environmental Governance

Field Engineering 2 (1)_resized

Each Emera company has a team dedicated to managing environmental performance and risk, with a senior leader who reports into the local executive team and works closely with the Emera Director of Environmental Governance. Local and corporate-level scorecards contain targets relevant to our environmental performance to ensure our strategic goals are delivered.

Environmental Management Systems

Emera companies manage environmental risks through an Environmental Management System (EMS) that meets the ISO 14001 international standard. An EMS is a set of tools and processes that allows our companies to better manage environmental aspects of our business and set goals to improve environmental performance.

Achieving results through collaboration is key to how we work across Emera. We’re proud to be part of the communities we serve and we aim to build productive, collaborative relationships with our regulators, industry peers and community partners. We strive to maintain a culture of integrity, and building strong, trusting relationships is an important part of how we work. We welcome discussion and input from our stakeholders and strive to create opportunities for open communication.
