Emera Leadership

Scott Balfour

President & Chief Executive Officer, Emera Inc.

Scott Balfour became President and Chief Executive Officer of Emera in 2018, after joining the company in 2012 as Chief Financial Officer and serving as Chief Operating Officer from 2016. Since joining Emera, he has played a central role in transforming the company into a leading North American regulated utility with a diversified, high‑quality asset base.

Scott has led Emera Inc. through a period of disciplined growth and sustained value creation, delivering 19 consecutive years of dividend growth — a record that reflects consistent earnings performance, prudent capital allocation and long‑term strategic execution.

A cornerstone of Emera’s growth during Scott’s tenure with the company was the $10.4 billion USD acquisition of TECO Energy in 2016, one of Canada’s largest cross‑border mergers and acquisitions. Since then, Emera has expanded the scale of its regulated utility platform across North America, growing its asset base by more than 40 per cent while maintaining a strong focus on financial discipline and long‑term value creation for shareholders.

Emera is a member of the S&P/TSX 60 Index and, in 2025, became the first Nova Scotia headquartered company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange alongside its long‑standing Toronto Stock Exchange listing, broadening access to global capital markets. In May 2021, Scott was named CEO of the Year by Atlantic Business Magazine.

Alongside growth and capital markets leadership, Scott continues to prioritize the safe, reliable and affordable delivery of energy to customers, recognizing the essential role Emera’s regulated utilities play in the communities they serve.

Before joining Emera, Scott spent nearly two decades in Canada’s finance and construction sectors. At Aecon Group Inc., he served first as Chief Financial Officer and later as President, helping lead the company’s growth from a $60 million business to a $2.8 billion publicly traded construction firm.

Scott currently serves as a director of several Emera operating companies, including as Chair of Tampa Electric, Peoples Gas and Nova Scotia Power. He is also a former Director of Martinrea International Inc. and past Chair of the Ontario Energy Association.

He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Master of Business Administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario.
