Bear Swamp – Stability in Long-Term Contract

Bear Swamp is a pumped storage hydro-electric generating facility producing 600 MW of highly reliable electricity on the Deerfield River in northern Massachusetts. It sells energy, capacity and ancillary services to the New England Power Pool. In 2007, Bear Swamp reached its goal of signing a capacity agreement with Long Island Power Authority for a long-term contract for a significant portion of its output.

Because it is one of only two of its kind in New England, Bear Swamp is a very flexible asset, allowing Emera to capitalize on changing market conditions to optimize value. Emera owns Bear Swamp in a 50/50 joint venture with Brookfield Power.
