HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, June 14, 2002: Four senior Nova Scotia Power safety specialists are working with Department of Environment and Labour officials to determine the cause of an accident that took the life of 37-year-old power line technician Michael Murrin on Friday morning.
Mr. Murrin was part of a Nova Scotia Power crew replacing a power pole on Mira Road in Sydney when the accident involving a transport truck occurred. Live power lines were not involved in the accident.
Nova Scotia Power safety specialists were on the scene soon after the accident and the company is sharing all information with lead investigators from the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour.
Chris Huskilson, Chief Operating Officer of Nova Scotia Power, said: "This is a very sad day for all of us. We are doing all we can to support Mike's family and his co-workers."
After the accident, Nova Scotia Power line technicians involved in non-critical work were asked to "stand down." Crews from Port Hawkesbury and Mabou were dispatched to Sydney to complete the work that had been started by the Sydney crew.
Employees have been contacted to remind them that they can access confidential counseling support through the Employee Assistance Program.
The safety specialists from Nova Scotia Power were developing a preliminary investigation report on Friday that will be provided to the Department of Environment and Labour. Those who were at the scene at the time of the accident will be interviewed next week.
