Emera Supports IWK Telethon

Halifax, Nova Scotia, May 31, 2002: Emera would like to remind Maritimers that the IWK Telethon for Children is taking place this weekend. The regional energy company says it's an ideal time to talk to families about the importance of safety and injury prevention.

"It's a message we want to take to all Maritimers," said David Mann, President and Chief Executive Officer of Emera. "Our goal is to reduce childhood injuries and make our communities a safe place for children to grow."

Emera is the founding partner of the IWK Child Safety and Injury Prevention Program. Part of the program includes a mini mobile home called the Children's Safety House, which now has a permanent home in front of the IWK Health Centre.

"We're very proud of our partnership with Emera," said Don Ford, CEO of the IWK Health Centre. "This regional energy company is actively promoting safety in the workplace, in the home and in our communities."
Preventing injuries among children and youth is a compelling public health issue. Every year over 2,400 children and youth are admitted to health care facilities for treatment of injuries; approximately 30 children die each year as a result. Statistics show that 90 per cent of childhood injuries are preventable (1999 Comprehensive Report on Injuries in Nova Scotia: Trends & Patterns Among Children and Youth).

Emera is a major corporate fundraiser for the IWK Telethon. The 24-hour Telethon will broadcast live on ATV from Saturday, June 1st at 7pm until 7pm on Sunday, June 2nd.
